General Building
Elements to follow when using the standard limestone blocks for building (instead of bricks) or as a retaining wall medium.
- Blocks should be clean and free of quarry dust or inhibiters such as grease or detergents. It is preferred that in a dry climate the blocks be slightly damp or cool so as the block does not compete with the mortar when the mortar ages.
- That the mix be matched to the quality of the stone to which you are bonding. Usually a 6:1:1 mix will suffice but there are instances where it could be beneficial to use a weaker mix. Stonger mixes are used in a marine environement.
- Make sure that the parameters to which you are applying conform with the local; by laws of you local authority and that the foundation meets with the criteria recommended by a geotechnical engineer. The information supplied is only a guideline.
